International Overdose Awareness Day: 25 Years On. Still Needed.
International Overdose Awareness Day: A Penington Institute Initiative dedicated to bringing a global community together to take action on overdose.

August 31 is International Overdose Awareness Day, a day of reflection on the lives lost to overdose as well as a global call to action for the prevention of overdose. This year's theme is: 25 Years On. Still Needed. IOAD was first celebrated in 2001, but remains an integral celebration, not only for those in the recovery community and with those directly affected by overdose, but for all of us.

Overdose continues to ravage lives and harm communities around the globe. While it may seem like an unconquerable force, overdose can be prevented when our communities are armed with the right tools, knowledge, and understanding. Together, we will fight to end overdose.

“Recovery is about so much more than stopping the use of a substance…it’s about getting your life back. Overdose awareness reminds us that behind every statistic is a person, a family, and a community. When we replace shame and stigma with compassion, education, and connection, we create space for people to ask for help and believe that recovery is possible. No one is too far gone or too broken. There is always hope, and there is always a chance to begin again.”

You’ll leave with clear steps, confidence, and information on where to get supplies. Walk-ins welcome—no appointment needed. Bring a friend and learn together.
