In the fight against opioid addiction, a fresh strategy is gaining traction: low-threshold treatment. Low-threshold treatment refers to a type of healthcare intervention that aims to provide accessible and nonjudgmental support to individuals with opioid use disorders (OUD); FLACRA stands at the forefront of this initiative, acknowledging the pressing demand for enhanced care and integrating these approaches into diverse programs.
Understanding Low-Threshold Treatment
Low-threshold treatment focuses on simplifying access to assistance for individuals with Opioid Use Disorder (OUD), ensuring they receive the necessary support for opioid addiction. The treatment plan recognizes that there are barriers stopping people from getting treatment, transportation, complicated regulations, or insufficient support among the most common. Even though some restrictions have been relaxed, many people still do not get the help they need, which can be extremely harmful.
What low-threshold addiction care involves
Quick Start: Instead of making people wait, they can start treatment with medications for opioid use disorder (MOUD) like Suboxone, Naltrexone, Methadone, or buprenorphine, right away. This rapid initiation reduces the risk of relapse and overdose deaths during the critical period of seeking treatment.
Flexible Support: People can have access to counseling and other supportive services as needed.
Optional Counseling: While available and recommended, counseling is not required. People can choose what kind of help they want. This respects the individual's autonomy, allowing them to select the level of support that aligns with their preferences and needs.
Personalized Care: Treatment decisions are based on what is best for the individual, clinical decisions are made collaboratively with the individual, considering their unique circumstances and goals.
Reduced Barriers to Entry: Minimized barriers that may deter individuals from seeking treatment. This includes addressing logistical obstacles such as transportation or scheduling constraints, as well as reducing the stigma associated with addiction treatment.
The Benefits of Low-Threshold Programs
Research indicates that low-threshold programs excel in engaging individuals in treatment and maintaining their participation, in contrast to traditional approaches such as treatment mandates.
More People Start Treatment: Getting help quickly means more people sign up for treatment.
People Stick with Treatment: Because fewer restrictions exist, more people stay in treatment longer.
Treatment is Easier to Access: Services are provided through various channels and locations, facilitating access to assistance for a diverse range of individuals. FLACRA now extends same-day and crisis response services across nine (9) counties within the Finger Lakes region and surrounding communities.
